Host Wine Tasting Journal

Winery Host and Tour Guide Director

All for the "cause" of the wine country lifestyle!

Tasting, sniffing and investigating a wide array of wines
can be educational, inspiring and a lot of fun!
For me, describing the aromas, flavors and the mouthfeel of a wine
inspires and brings forth the poetry within.
And besides, keeping a journal reminds me of what I've tasted.
Why not keep a journal of your sensory wine tasting experiences!

Wines with meals of the fall season, such as Turkey

As with seasons of the vineyard, so with seasons of the forest and field. At Leonesse Cellars we enjoy fresh foods from local
farmers, in season and organic when possible. Turkey is the classic meal for the fall season in many parts of the world, enjoyed
with fresh harvest vegetables. Home-made pumpkin or apple pie usually complete the meal. What wines go well with these fresh
and flavorful fall dishes?

All pallats are different. So why not be adventurous and try a variety of wines!

  • To begin with, many people pour easy to drink, light reds like Beaujolais Nouveau, (A white-wine style, to be drunk chilled around 45F.
A light, fruity wine. It goes well with turkey, or with brie and edam for a pre-dinner snack.
A seasonal “drink-now” favorite from the southern part of Burgundy, France.

Joel recommends:

  • Enjoy our own Leonesse Cellars, Lana~Lisa Rose of Cabernet Saugvignon (A dry, rose wine with only 1.1% residual sugar.
Bursting with fresh aromas and flavors of fresh raspberries and cranberries, the fresh fruitiness make this wine the ideal accompaniment
to a wide variety of foods, including turkey, cheeses and Italian spicy dishes with tomato sauce.)

  • If you like sweeter, blush wines, enjoy our ever popular, White Merlot. (Similar to White Zinfandel, a refreshing wine bursting with aromas and flavors of strawberries and rasberries.) Goes well with turkey and dressing.

  • Enjoy the light aromas and rich fruit flavors of our Late Harvest Muscat Canelli with fresh fruit, or puried over your favorite ice cream.
I especially like it drizzled over pecan
    pie and ice cream.

  • Our Rhone Varietals such as Cinsaut and Syrah would gladly accompany turkey and spicy dressings.

White Rhone Blend Tastings

2008 Leonesse Cellars / Melange de Blanc - 11/14/09

Joel's Tasting Notes: A morning stroll through citrus groves, laced with the sweet fragrance of
honeysuckle blossoms and peaches with the slightest hint of vanilla bean coffee on the breeze.

A smooth and elegant mouthfeel with a refreshing, "wake-me-up" zing!
I imagine this inviting wine paired with a brisk, vibrant classical piece of music just before breakfast
or with breakfast!

Wine Maker's Tasting Notes: Melange de Blanc is a richly aromatic wine modeled after
the great white wines of the Rhone Valley in France. A blend of Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier,
this crisp and well-balanced wine offers beautiful aromas and flavors of white peach, pear and honeysuckle,
with a hint of lemon tea.

Chardonnay Tastings

2007 Frei Brothers / Russian River Valley Chardonnay - 11/13/09

Joel: A fresh and lively bouquet of crisp "tree" fruit, this Chardonnay is oh-so-inviting!
With a very slight and pleasant hint of deliciously nutty, buttered toast,
this wine lingers on and on with a "drink-me-again" refrain!

Frei Brothers: Our Chardonnay is big and intense with a soft mouthfeel and a long crisp finish.
It expresses complex varietal characters of bright pear, peach and citrus, and a hint of vanilla and spice.

2007 La Crema /Sonoma Coast Chardonnay - 11/13/09

Joel's Tasting Notes: Rustic vanilla cream sauce drizzled over a spritzy, apple pie ala mode.
This rich chardonnay is accented by a slight hint of cinammon and clove spice on the nose!
A soft vanilla mouth-feel bursting with toasty caramel and mocha for a pleasant lingering finish!

La Crema Tasting Notes:
"The 2007 release of our Sonoma Coast Chardonnay bursts with vivid citrus and fresh green apple aromas, laced with subtle notes of honeysuckle and clove. On the palate, flavors broaden into rich spiced apple and crisp lime zest, with vanilla and caramel tones adding richness and texture on the finish." - Melissa Stackhouse, La Crema Winemaker

The Place: Sonoma County

Like the Burgundy wine region of France, the vineyards of Sonoma Coast offer an unusually long, cool and even growing season. Lingering fog and wind from the nearby Pacific Ocean (or, in Los Carneros’ case, the San Pablo Bay), moderate temperatures throughout the growing season and slow the ripening process. With an extended “hang” time on the vines, the results at harvest are small berries with firm acidity and highly concentrated varietal aromas and flavors.

Wine Stats:

Appellation: Sonoma Coast
Composition: 100% Chardonnay
Type of Oak: 87% French (25% new), 13% American (5% new), medium to medium-plus toast levels
Time in Barrels: 7 months
Alcohol: 13.9%
T.A.: 0.59g/100ml
pH: 3.58
R.S.: 0.14%
